Week 9 - Space + Art

As Antony Garrett Lisi once so wisely said "I think the universe is pure geometry - basically, a beautiful shape twisting around and dancing over space-time." (Space Quotes). Space is one of the most incredible fields of study with truly infinite possibilities. When I think of space I think of opportunities, what is out there that we don't know about?

The more you think about how space has limitless possibilities you understand how incredible the information we have is and what we are able to do with it. Living on earth is always going to create suspicion of what else is out there - and this inquiry about space dates back centuries. Ancient civilizations (Ancient Astrology) began the study of astronomy through looking at the stars and creating stories about the shapes they make.

A lot of these stories and assumptions are still used today in popular horoscopes. We find this so interesting because compared we are so small compared to the universe and creating these ideas about legends helps to bring meaning and purpose into our lives that might at sometimes seem we live in an insignificant existence.

This week when I found out we were learning about relating space and art I was ecstatic as I love learning about anything astronomy as I am taking it as a class this quarter. The more I learn about this field of study I realise how often Art is incorporated into this study to increase the amount of information they are able to find and use to help us understand more about the world around us.

Outer space is often associated with fantasy and this is because we don't know about the endless possibilities. For example one of my all time favourite movies called 'passengers' (2021) a sci-fi film about a voyage to another planet due to overpopulation where passengers hibernate in pods for 120 years. The talent and production behind this film is truly remarkable and gives the audience a little insight to the life outside the world. I also like this film as it seems very realistic for potentially our future is over population continues to become an issue. Along with this movies like 'star wars' that have a creative aspect of spaceships fighting which brings an artistic side to the graphics of the film.  Art and space create a really unique dimension of reality and fantasy as there is so much about space that we have not yet discovered.

"Space art" (2021) is a term used to describe the incredible work of modern artistic expression to show the beautiful wonders of the outer universe. This is really fascinating looking at some of the sculptures and artwork created with a realistic yet that has a fantasy idea behind it. Some of this work is truly incredible where the artist is trying to replicate space through their own expression. (Space Pictures).  This is not only limited to paintings but also photography which is very fitting considering the rare lunar eclipse that occurred this week. Art involves taking photos it was really cool to see some detailed photos come out of an incredibly rare event.

Space and art have an exciting future exsecially as technology continues to develop and we continue to find out more about our world.
