Week 9 - Space + Art

Image
As Antony Garrett Lisi once so wisely said " I think the universe is pure geometry - basically, a beautiful shape twisting around and dancing over space-time." (Space Quotes). Space is one of the most incredible fields of study with truly infinite possibilities. When I think of space I think of opportunities, what is out there that we don't know about?  Antony Garrett Lisi giving a ted talk The more you think about how space has limitless possibilities you understand how incredible the information we have is and what we are able to do with it. Living on earth is always going to create suspicion of what else is out there - and this inquiry about space dates back centuries. Ancient civilizations ( Ancient Astrology)  began the study of astronomy through looking at the stars and creating stories about the shapes they make.  Ancient civilizations beginning the study of astronomy A lot of these stories and assumptions are still used today in pop...

Week 8 - Nanotech + Art

Image
Nanotechnology is a lively and exciting area of study that is increasingly becoming our future. This  systematic enterprise brings new idea that has the potential to be present on a world scale by not just being focused on a specific area. Us as humans encounter nanotechnology everyday without even noticing through clothing, food and technology.  Nanotechnology Throughout the lecture this week we have learned nanotechnology is the understanding of matter  on a nanometer scale. Because this is done on such a small scale it allows the incorporation of art and technology to  conceptualise ideas which are often far to small for the naked eye to see.    Going back in time, nanotechnology has been around for centuries where in daily life people were exploring to understand how things worked in the world. Often they were not able to explain how or why something was operating the way it was but could identify properties to help gain a ...

Event 2: Midterm Presentations

Image
On the 12th of May I attended an event showcasing some of the best midterm presentations. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing about other peoples innovative idea's and really appreciated the time and thought process behind a lot of these concepts. The first midterm presentation was by a student proposing the idea of an agent that from both the inside and outside slows down the ageing of the body. This is a really interesting topic to cover as a lot of people suffer from age related diseases particularly on the skin like cancer and skin damage etc. This student came up with idea's that allowed skin to be preserved and almost not change despite the body getting older.  Skin aging happens to everyone but with an agent this could help to significantly reduce this problem At the event another midterm presentation that stood out to me, was by a student who proposed the idea of fact checking glasses. In our world today there is so much media that provides news, statistics ...

Week 7: Neuroscience + Art

Image
Neuroscience is a rapidly advancing and exciting field of study particularly focusing on the brain and nervous system. It incorporates understandings of  physiology, anatomy, and biology in which art is often used to help gain a further understanding.  Neuroscience advancing with today's technology The actual study of neuroscience is a fairly new topic of study due to technology being able to advance this however, the idea dates back centuries. In the past it was very common to try and define  consciousness by finding patterns and trends as to why humans do things the way they do.  Aristotle was a  Greek philosopher - also known as the father of psychology - who originally thought the thinking was done in the heart (Vensa).  Aristotle - "Father of Psychology" As time went on, technology developed and humans understanding grew, scientists have been able to develop a more complex and accurate representation of the brain. They correlate more with fun...

Bio Technology + Art

Image
Biotechnology is an advancing concept that enhances biological systems by using living organisms to develop or create different products.  Biotechnology in our modern world In lecture for this week our guest speaker Marta Menezes gave us great insight on her own methodology for research and art with some examples being defining, ideating, pro typing, testing, and empathising. It was really eye opening to see the dedication and commitment with time she put into this and something which hopefully others could be inspired to take the lead on in the future. Professor Vesna continued to discuss in lecture how other bio artists work with live cells, tissues, and animals by introducing other biotechnology art projects like 'Blood Wars' and 'Genetic Folk Art'.  Another Biotechnology project that was discussed is the GFP bunny - which used used a jellyfish's fluorescent protein and inserted this into a rabbit cell.  GFD bunny Our world is constantly changing - ...
